Antigua and Barbuda WTO Dispute Continues

This Friday Antigua and Barbuda will again hold talks in an attempt to resolve their ongoing dispute over Internet gambling and players from the U.S. Dr Errol Cort, Antigua's Minister of Finance and Economy has been in Washington this week to talk with the United States Trade Representative regarding the matters.

It was in 2003 that Antigua originally accused the United States of violating trade treaties by prohibiting Caribbean companies from operating in America, and the World Trade Organization (WTO) has already awarded Antigua a $21 million dollar a year settlement in trade sanctions. It is reported that the US has not been complying with the sanctions, and stands to incur additional penalties if things are not resolved shortly between the two.

The legal process through the WTO is on hold until the 6th of June, at which time it will resume if the countries cannot resolve the dispute on their own.
