Serbia Versus Netherlands World Cup Preview

Leipzig June 11, 2006 - Serbia/Netherlands

My Pick: Netherlands

The Netherlands probably considered the most deserving team not to have won a World Cup so far, go into the World Cup with an air of cautious optimism. They were impressive while qualifying, going though 12 games unbeaten as they proved too strong for their nearest rivals, the Czechs. Macedonia were the only team to take points off the Dutch in qualifying.

Coach Marco Van Basten has selected a very young side and ignored veterans like Edgar Davids and Roy Makaay. The squad is a attack minded team with the likes of Rafael Van der vaart, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Dirk Kuyt leading the burst forward. There is no dearth of playmaking talent in this Dutch side at all. The problem, as it is with all attack minded sides is the defence. The Dutch side does not boast of a solid backline and this is where the other teams would be looking to exploit chinks.

Injuries/Suspensions: With Sneijder and Cocu being deemed fit, a big burden has been lifted off Van Basten's mind.

Goal scorers: As I mentioned before, there is no dearth of attackers in the Dutch first team. But I think Ruud Van Nistelrooy has something to prove, especially with him most likely to leave Old Trafford.Arjen Robben will be keen to remove his "diver" tag too.

Serbia and Montenegro squad: Serbia and Montenegro will be playing their last World Cup as a combined team for Montenegro has voted to be a separate country. This is added impetus for the immensely talented squad to create a flutter or two in the much-renowned Group of Death. S & M had a qualifying campaign par excellence; winning 7 of their 10 games and going unbeaten throughout the campaign, like the Dutch. Nemanja Vidic, Mateja Kezman, Dejan Stankovic, Sasa Ilic, Zvonimir Vukic are some of their more famous players and the they have the lanky Nikola Zigic, who is probably the tallest player in the tournament. All in all, the squad is really strong, but can it withstand the pressures of the Group of Death? Only time will tell.

My verdict:
Its Oranje Flair vs Serbian cautiousness. The game should be a real treat for the neutrals. The Oranje can beat the best on their day. But will it be their day??? Only time will tell.
