Netherlands versus Argentina World Cup Preview

Frankfurt June 21, 2006 - Netherlands/Argentina

My Pick: Argentina

A youthful team coached by a three time European Footballer of the Year will meet a side whose coach has won the FIFA youth World Cup thrice to decide the winner of the "Group of Death". Yes folks, it is Holland vs Argentina to clash on Wednesday in Frankfurt.

Holland haven't exactly displayed the best of form en route to this one. They secured one goal margin wins against Serbia and Ivory Coast to confirm their progress to the next stage. They have been bailed out on both occasions by some wonderful pieces of individual magic by Messrs Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and company. There is no lack of attacking finesse in this youthful squad but there are chinks in the defence which could be exploited by the Argentines. However neutrals and pundits alike are disappointed by Marco Van Basten's statements that he may rest his key players as they have already qualified.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Khalid Boulahrouz, Johnny Heitinga, Arjen Robben, Joris Mathijsen and Mark van Bommel will all have to be wary of getting suspended. Still there is good news in the fact that once the knockout stages start, the slates will be wiped clean.

Argentina have played some dazzling football, including an exquisite display to whip Serbia 6-0.In that game, the world saw what Lionel Messi is capable of in 13 minutes and the Dutch defence will be hoping that he does not give them many probelms. The Dutch will also have to contend with the technical midfield genius that is Juan Riquelme. The Villareal medio can see opportunities which others cannot and his defence splitting passes are made with absolute disrespect for the opponent defence. He has been on song so far and would like to give the Dutch a dose of his playmaking skills. The Argentine backline has an equally tough job to mark the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rafael Van der Vaart and Robben, but their midfield superiority might just see the Dutch forward line being mute spectators.

My verdict:
This will be a match between two gifted attacking teams. If form is anything to go by, back Argentina to win comfortably. Especially if Van Basten rests his key players.
