My Pick: England
After sweating it out against Paraguay, England would love to silence their critics when they step out to take on Trinidad and Tobago in their second game in Group B. As the game kicks off in the evening, heat should not be a telling factor. And after a timid performance against Paraguay, the Englishmen would like to thrash the living daylights out of T & T.
England team news: Eriksson came in for a lot of criticism for his negative approach in the second half. Hence, a more attacking game from England is likely. Owen and Crouch are set to start again upfront, amidst strong rumours that Wayne Rooney might as well start the game after miraculously recovering from the dreaded metatarsal. The defence line looks rock solid and one cannot see any changes there. Beckham and Cole will start on the flanks and will provide the width.
Injuries/Suspensions: Steven Gerrard was not at his fittest in the first game. But he is to retain his midfield spot after shrugging off any fitness doubts. Wayne Rooney also may play some part in the game. No other injury worries for Sven's squad. Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch are both on a yellow card.
Trinidad and Tobago just won their own World Cup on the 11th. In what can be billed as one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, the islanders shut out the Swedes and held them to a draw. The confidence must be really high in the T & T camp, but they too will do well not to undermine the English attack.
T&T team news: Will Dwight Yorke play in the midfield again? Or will he partner Stern John up front? There are some nagging issues to be sorted out. Dwight Yorke's absence up-front may result in lack of any goals for the islanders. It would really take a herculean task to breach the impeccable English back four. Trinidad and Tobago will mostly play with just one man up-front, Coventry's Stern John with Chris Birchall playing in the hole behind him.
Injuries/Suspensions: Defender Avery John is suspended for the clash after picking up the first red card of the tournament. Dwight Yorke and Stern John are also on one-yellow card.
My verdict:
England were battered by the media for "not putting in a convincing attacking performance" against Paraguay. And they would like to set the record
straight. T & T could be on the receiving end of a supreme England display. Anything less, and Trinidad perhaps would have won its second World Cup in as many games!
