My Pick: England
England and Ecuador will fight it out for a spot in the last 8 when they meet in the Gottlieb Daimler stadion in Stuttgart on Sunday.
England have not yet put up any display worth talking about but still topped Group B ahead of Sweden with 2 wins and a draw. They secured scrappy wins against Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago before drawing 2-2 with the Swedes. With Gary Neville most likely to be on the bench, his replacement Jamie Carragher hasn't exactly been able to fill the older Neville's boots. That may open the door for the versatile Owen Hargreaves to play for his country in the very country where he plies his trade. The back looks pretty strong with the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole manning it. It does look like Sven may change his tactics and bring in Michael Carrick as a holding midfielder. This will give the pair of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard more freedom to move upfront. The introduction of Carrick may mean that Beanpole Peter Crouch will most likely be sacrificed with Rooney playing as sole striker. Whether the Manchester United wonderkid has recovered enough to play the full 90 minutes, we do not know.Pacy right winger Aaron Lennon might come on late to trouble the tired Ecuadorean legs.
Injuries: As I said before Gary Neville has not regained full fitness and will be on the bench. Similar doubts are being cast over the fitness of Rio Ferdinand but it does look like the United central defender will partner Terry. Crouch will also be on the bench.
Ecuador have surprised themselves and their harshest critics by qualifying from Group A behind Germany. They played well as a unit against Poland and Costa Rica but lost focus against the Germans in their last league game. They will look to forget that game and will look to start afresh against the English. Ecuador are a physical squad and Sven Goran Eriksson will have done well to note that. The biggest threat to Ecuador as said by their coach will be Wayne Rooney. He hasn't scored in this tournament and will be looking to slot in any opportunities that come his way. The key players for Ecuador will be Carlos Tenorio and Ex saints striker Agustin Delgado. They missed the last game against the Germans where Kaviedes partnered Felix Borja upfront. Ecuador will look to score the early goal and then soak up the pressure. They will also have to contend will the strong English midfield with the likes of Joe Cole, Beckham and Lampard.
My verdict:
England should get progressively better as the tournament goes on and should beat Ecuador. But if the South Americans get the all important first goal, then
we could see pressure on the English. But I do not foresee any major problems for Sven's men. Sweden have been knocked out by the hosts and England will want to make sure
that there is atleast one Group B representative in the last 8.
