Argentina versus Mexico World Cup Preview

Leipzig June 24, 2006 - Argentina/Mexico

My Pick: Argentina

The last time a non-European team won a world cup in Europe was in 1958 when Argentina's prime nemesis won in Sweden. But Argentina would like to set the record straight and ensure that the Cup goes stays in the South American continent come the 9th of July.

Argentina have looked massively impressive in their group games and have shown delectable touches and flicks, and have scored plenty of goals. Jose Pekerman has an embarrassment of riches to choose his squad from. He looks all set to start with his tried and tested partnership of Saviola and Crespo upfront with Tevez, Messi, J.Cruz all starting on the bench. Juan Roman Riquelme will marshal the midfield and his passing skills should cause a lot of trouble to the inexperienced Mexican defense. The back line looks stable with Sorin, Heinze, Burdisso and Ayala all having an excellent World Cup so far.

Injuries/Suspensions: Lio Messi has gained full fitness and is a treat to watch in full flow. No other niggles in the Argentine camp. All fit as a fiddle.

Mexico, in my opinion, have been very lucky to make the last 16. After a 3-1 thrashing of Iran, they looked completely lackluster against Angola and were poor against Portugal. Makeshift striker Omar Bravo has not been able to fill the boots of Jared Borgetti while Fonseca and Blanco have not delivered when required.

Mexico
The Mexicans went 3 at the back against Portugal, with Marquez playing in midfield. The move backfired as Portugal ran riot in the opening few minutes and eventually won the game 2-1. The Mexicans need to beef up their defense if they have to keep Argentina at bay. Oswaldo Sanchez would be a key figure in the game. The shot-stopper will have a lot to keep himself busy and Mexico's chances hinge on his goalkeeping abilities.

Injuries/ Suspensions: Jared Borgetti is a big doubt for the game. Mexico's highest goalscorer limped off in the very first game and his return could possibly make a difference to the team's fortunes. "I feel good and I'm keen to play," said Borgetti. Luis Perez is suspended for this one after being sent off against Portugal.

My verdict:
Argentina to thrash the living daylights out of Mexico. No two ways about it!
